Prior Authorization: The Hidden Bottleneck in the Healthcare Revenue Cycle
Faster authorizations. Fewer delays. Protected reimbursement.

Prior authorization has become a significant operational challenge for healthcare providers. Before certain services, procedures, medications, or diagnostic tests can be reimbursed, providers may need to obtain approval from the patient's insurance plan.
Although prior authorization is designed to support appropriate utilization of healthcare services, the administrative process can introduce delays between clinical decision-making and reimbursement. Staff may need to verify requirements, submit clinical information, respond to payer requests, monitor authorization status, and communicate with patients and providers.
When authorization is incomplete, expired, submitted incorrectly, or not obtained within the required timeframe, the financial consequences can be significant. A service may be delayed, denied, or require additional administrative work to determine whether reimbursement remains possible.
The challenge becomes greater when authorization requirements differ between payers or change over time. Practices must therefore maintain reliable processes for identifying requirements before services are delivered.
Without an effective authorization workflow, prior authorization can become a bottleneck that affects patient access, staff productivity, claim submission, and ultimately revenue collection.
