Underpaid Medical Claims: The Revenue Loss Hiding Behind Paid Claims
Spot underpayments. Protect contracted rates. Recover missed dollars.

When a healthcare claim is paid, it is easy to assume the revenue cycle has successfully completed its job. However, payment does not necessarily mean correct payment.
Underpayments occur when the amount reimbursed is lower than what the provider is contractually or otherwise appropriately entitled to receive. Unlike denials, underpayments can be harder to identify because the claim has technically been processed and money has entered the practice's account.
This makes underpayments a potentially overlooked source of revenue loss. A practice may have a strong collection rate and a relatively low denial rate while still failing to identify discrepancies between expected reimbursement and actual payer payments.
Identifying these discrepancies requires accurate contract information, reliable payment posting, appropriate expected-reimbursement calculations, and regular analysis of payer payment patterns.
Without a structured underpayment review process, even small differences can accumulate across thousands of claims. Over time, these missed amounts can represent a meaningful gap between the revenue a practice earned and the revenue it actually collected.
